LING 401 - Introduction to Linguistic Theory (3 credits)
A survey of the principles of modern linguistic analysis; current approaches to phonological, morphological, and syntactic methods and analyses.
LING 402 - Syntax I (3 credits)
Principles of grammatical analysis in the generative framework; an overview of syntactic structures across languages.
LING 404 - Phonology I (3 credits)
The analysis of the sound systems of human languages; focus on common phonological processes across languages and on phonetics-phonology interface.
LING 446 - First Language Acquisition (3 credits)
How children learn their first language; psycholinguistic aspects of lexical, syntactic, semantic, and phonological development.
LING 447 - Bilingualism (3 credits)
Explores the social and psychological aspects of bilingualism; topics include languages in contact, transference, maintenance and loss.
LING 448 - Sociolinguistics (3 credits)
Issues in the study of language in its sociocultural context; analysis of social dialects and speech styles.
LING 449 - Semantics (3 credits)
LING 449 Semantics I (3) The study of meaning in human language; problems and methods of analysis in linguistic semantics; study of sense, reference, compositionality, quantification, presupposition, and sentence-level meaning.
LING 500 - Syntax II (3 credits)
LING 500 Syntax II (3) Advanced topics in syntactic analysis and theory.
LING 502 - Historical Linguistics (3 credits)
Principles of comparative linguistics; language families; reconstruction of lost languages.
LING 504- Phonology II (3 credits)
Advanced topics in phonological analysis and theory. Prerequisite: Ling. 404 or equivalent.
LING 520 - Seminar in Psycholinguistics (3 credits)
Topics to be covered include second language acquisition in children and adults, language comprehension and memory in a second language, code switching and language mixing, the consequences of bilingualism, and the neuropsychology of bilingualism.
LING 545 - Morphology (3 credits)
The study of word-formation in the world's languages and examines interaction of phonological, structural, and semantic aspects of the lexicon.
LING 548 - Sociolinguistics
LING 548 Sociolinguistics (new course)
LING 570 - History of Modern Linguistics (3 credits)
A historical survey of views on language; examination of linguistic thought in various historical periods.
